Despite taking 20 more trips to the free throw line, Miles could not turn the extra opportunities into a win Monday night against Lane. The Lady Bears had two opportunities to tie the game from the charity stripe but could not convert, leading to a 52-50 loss to the Dragons at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
Miles trailed by 11 points at the end of the first quarter but had taken the lead on a
Victoria Sutton 3-pointer midway through the third quarter. Lane would still lead 36-34 going into the fourth quarter as Chasity Moore's putback at the horn came after a
Raiana Johnson blocked shot. A 3-point play by
Sakina Wynn gave the Lady Bears a 43-42 lead but Addie McNeely stroked two 3-pointers to help the Dragons reestablish a four-point advantage with 40 seconds remaining.
The Lady Bears continued to charge. Wynn drained a 3-pointer with 26 seconds left to cut the deficit to 49-48. After McNeely made two free throws,
Amoni Walker was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 9.7 seconds left. She missed the first but knocked down the next two to bring Miles back within one. After Antrice McCoy split two free throws on the other end, Miles still had a chance. Walker drove the basket and was fouled with 0.8 seconds left. Unfortunately, she missed the first free throw. She would then intentionally miss the second but the Lady Bears could not tip the ball into the basket. For the game, Miles was 18-of-34 from the free throw line.
McNeely had 20 points, Alexis Harris added 11 and McCoy finished with 10. Sutton led the Lady Bears with 13 points and Wynn added 10 while
Taylor Terry (seven points, eight rebounds) and Johnson (nine points, eight rebounds) performed well for Miles, which travels to face Spring Hill Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
