CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Sillers Coliseum has historically been a tough venue for Miles and, unfortunately, it wasn't much different for the Lady Bears on Saturday afternoon.
The offense stalled out the gate and Delta State opened up a big lead early in cruising to a 72-53 win over Miles. The Lady Bears (5-3) lost consecutive games for the first time this season and fell to 0-7 all-time at the home of the Lady Statesmen (7-1).
Delta State scored the first eight points of the game. Meanwhile, Miles could not put the ball in the basket. The Lady Bears made just one field goal - by
Kahyanne Bolton at the 6:34 mark - and missed their final eight shots of the quarter. Worse, the team turned the ball over eight times as the Lady Statesmen led 17-6 at the end of the period.
Things didn't get much better in the second quarter. Bolton and
Sakina Wynn had the only buckets and Miles shot less than 16 percent for the half as the Lady Bears 35-13 at the break. Delta State had more baskets (14) and Miles had as many turnovers (13) as points in the first 20 minutes. While Miles did better offensively in the second half, it got no closer than 13 points. Delta State, though, had a response and ran the lead as high as 25 points in the fourth quarter.
Quantesha Patterson (13 points, 13 rebounds) and Nia Johnson (11 points) were the top scorers for Delta State. Wynn had 17 points and 8 rebounds, Bolton added 14 points and
Jessica Hollis chipped in with 8 points and 5 rebounds for Miles, which hosts Savannah State on Dec. 16. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
