Golden Bears back in win column

Miles had four players score in double figures and used a dominant first half to easily distance itself from Carver College in a 77-48 win Tuesday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.

Avery Brown scored a game-high 17 points while Braeden Stewart (16 points, 12 rebounds, 2 blocks) and Frank Royles (13 points, 12 rebounds, 3 steals) each posted double-doubles for the Golden Bears (4-1). Carver (1-8) missed its first four shots and turned the ball over three times as Miles took a quick 6-0 lead. But a 17-0 run midway through the first half gave Miles all the room it needed for the rest of the night.

The Golden Bears lead was as large as 27 points in the first half and they went into the break with a 41-17 lead. Brown scored 11 of his points on 5-of-7 shooting as Miles shot 47 percent from the field. Conversely, the Cougars made just five shots from the field over the first 20 minutes and shot just under 21 percent.

The Miles advantage reached 30 points within the first five minutes of the second half. But Carver used a 13-2 run to get the deficit to 19 points with 11:14 to go. But a 3-pointer by Royles less than a minute later pushed the Golden Bears lead to 57-35 and the Cougars would not get closer than 20 points the rest of the way.

T.J. Boykins scored 12 points to lead Carver. Jelani Watson-Gayle had 12 points and 4 assists and Terrell Waiters added 7 points for Miles, which opens conference play on Saturday at Benedict. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
