Miles wins fourth straight

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- After some offensive struggles the past two games, Miles got back on track against Edward Waters. The Golden Bears overcame a third quarter resurgence and an inordinate amount of penalties to pull away for a 49-28 win at First Coast High School Stadium.

The win was the fourth straight for the Golden Bears (6-1), who rolled up 504 yards in offense and forced five turnovers. Donte Edwards rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown, Justin Ruiz (83 yards rushing) scored twice in the first half and Daniel Smith threw for two more scores in the first game between the two teams since 1966.

Miles led 28-0 at halftime but the third quarter belonged to Edward Waters (1-6)...and the penalty flags. The Tigers used more than eight minutes on the opening drive of the second half to get on the scoreboard. Then after a Ruiz fumble on Miles' third play from scrimmage on the ensuing drive, EWC got a 3-yard touchdown pass from Roshard Branch to Tyberious Horne that halved the Golden Bears' halftime advantage with 4:27 left in the period.

Edward Waters would force a Golden Bears punt and moved the ball inside the Miles 10-yard line inside the final minute of the third, looking to get even closer. Meanwhile, Miles was racking up penalty yards at a staggering rate. In the third quarter alone, the Golden Bears were charged with 11 penalties for 114 yards, with two more penalties that were offset by EWC penalties. In comparison, Miles ran just 10 plays on offense and collected 23 yards. For the game, Miles was charged with 22 penalties for 230 yards.

With the Tigers looking to score again at the start of the fourth quarter, Miles got a break. A bad snap from center was pounced on by linebacker Austin Stephens - his second fumble recovery of the game - and the Golden Bears took advantage. Smith punctuated a 10-play, 84 yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown run, leaping through several EWC defenders to cross the goalline, and give Miles a 35-14 lead.

Braxton Harris would force a fumble on the ensuing kickoff that was recovered by Antonio Evans (six tackles). Five plays later, Smith (213 yards passing) connected with a wide open Dominique McNealey (76 yards receiving) for a 21-yard touchdown pass that reestablished Miles' 28-point cushion with 8:59 to go. Li'Jon Cordier would cap the scoring for the Golden Bears with a 13-yard touchdown run , which was sandwiched by two EWC touchdowns.

Leonard Tyree had five catches for 50 yards and a touchdown, while linebackers Mitchell Smiley (team-high seven tackles), Ozzie Williams, Jr. (six tackles, two tackles for loss, forced fumble), N'Ktavious Floyd (five tackles, sack, interception) were exceptional on defense for Miles, which travels to face Central State on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
