There are not many times that a team can shoot less than 30 percent from the field and win with room to spare. But that is exactly what happened Saturday afternoon for the Miles Lady Bears.
Playing strong defense that forced 19 turnovers which led to 25 points, Miles - which shot 29.6 percent from the floor - never trailed in a 57-48 win over Paine at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
Raiana Johnson came off the bench to post a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds) for the Lady Bears (8-1, 4-0 SIAC West), who have won six straight.
The game remained close early, as Miles led just 22-18 at halftime. But the Lady Bears scored the first eight points of the third quarter, highlighted by a 3-point play from
Taylor Terry and 3-pointer by
Frantisha Tyson, to push the lead into double digits for the first time.
The Lady Lions (1-12, 1-5 SIAC East) would cut the deficit to five points but a late bucket by Johnson would send Miles into the fourth quarter with a 39-29 advantage.
Waynenecka Wynn (six points) would score the first four points of the final period to give Miles a 14-point lead, its biggest of the game. Paine would not get any closer than eight
points for the remainder of the contest.
Keondra Archie had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Paine. Terry had 10 points and eight rebounds and
Victoria Sutton had nine points, four rebounds and five assists for Miles, which will host Benedict on Monday in a battle of SIAC first place teams. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
