Spring Hill had no answer for Miles Monday night, especially
Damian Archer, who scored a career-high 30 points and added seven assists as the Golden Bears rolled to an 82-69 win at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
Archer lit up an array of Badger defenders with a bevy of moves that saw him go 11-of-14 from the field while making all eight of his free throw attempts. For perspective, he had only scored more than 20 points once in his 45-game career with the Golden Bears (13-6, 10-2 SIAC West) and his 11 made field goals were a career high. Even with Archer's performance, it was hardly a one-man band against Spring Hill (6-14, 2-9).
In the first half,
Nathan Sheffield came off the bench and provided the spark. The senior forward knocked down three 3-pointers and scored 12 of his 14 points as Miles battled to hold a 39-34 lead at the half. The Golden Bears were still without four players, including their top three centers, which led to more of a small-ball approach. But it did not stop the team from holding a 33-29 edge on the glass, led by guard
Jelani Watson-Gayle (eight) and
Rashawn Chapman (six).
The game was still relatively close five minutes into the second half, with Miles holding a 50-42 advantage after Brandon Fischer (15 points, 12 rebounds) scored for the Badgers. But SHC would go 3-of-12 from the field over the next eight minutes and Miles took advantage. When
LaByron Harris (11 points, four rebounds, two steals) scored on an Archer feed with just more than seven minutes remaining, the Golden Bears had opened its biggest lead at 67-50. The Badgers would not get closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
Justin Allison scored 18 points and Gresyn Rogers added 15 for Spring Hill. Watson-Gayle added 15 points, four assists and two steals and
Devonte Fuller had eight points and four rebounds for Miles, which hosts LeMoyne-Owen Saturday. Tip time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
