ALBANY, Ga. -- The Miles volleyball team dropped two matches during the second day of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Crossover at Albany State, losing in four sets to the host Golden Rams before falling in straight sets to Benedict.
Raiana Johnson had 20 total kills over the two matches while
Na'Kina Levingston and
Shatesa Harris each had 10 for the Lady Bears (3-9 overall, 2-7 SIAC West).
Match #1 - Albany State def. Miles (21-25, 21-15, 21-18, 21-17)
Miles played very well in the opening set, hitting .385 as a team and getting strong play at the net to help overcome a late deficit. But the team could not overcome its hitting woes over the last three sets (-.026) as it had 18 of its 21 attack errors during that frame and the Golden Rams, who pounded 15 service aces, won each set going away. Harris (six kills, two blocks), Levingston (six kills, three blocks),
Tatiyana Thomas (20 assists, three kills, two blocks), and
Raiana Johnson (six kills, three blocks) played well for the Lady Bears.
Match #2 - Benedict def. Miles (30-28, 25-23, 25-21)
The Lady Bears gave a spirited effort against the Tigers but could not get the big point down the stretch during any of the three sets. In the opening game, Miles staved off four set points and, at 27-26, had a chance to win before Benedict ultimately prevailed. Miles led 22-21 in the second game and was tied at 19 in the final game but the offense did not generate another point in each set as Benedict completed the sweep.
Raiana Johnson (14 kills, .310, six blocks) had a monster effort while
D'Nautica Johnson (17 digs),
Briana Brown (12 digs, five kills, three assists, two blocks) and
Maiya Northard (nine digs) paced the defense for the Lady Bears.
Miles wraps up play at the SIACÂ Crossover Saturday when it plays Clark Atlanta. First serve is scheduled for 8 a.m.
