MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- Miles opened its 2018 volleyball season with a straight set loss (25-10, 25-15, 25-8) to Montevallo Tuesday night at Trustmark Arena.
While there were glimpses of good play in the Lady Bears' first match under interim head coach
Francesca Boone, Miles (0-1) struggled overall. The Falcons (3-1) hit .341 as a team and scored at least eight consecutive points in each game to break open competitive starts by the Lady Bears.
After dropping the first set, Miles scored the first six points of Set No. 2, forcing the Falcons to call an early timeout. The Lady Bears would hold a 10-6 lead before Montevallo scored 13 of the next 14 points - including 10 straight - to take command. The third set was much the same as Montevallo used an eight-point surge as part of a 13-1 run to put the game, and match, out of reach.
Miles was never able to mount much pressure offensively, garnering just eight kills, five blocks and two service aces while hitting -.116 as a team. Boone played the entire roster and experimented with lineups as she sought match experience for her young squad that includes five newcomers and just three upperclassmen.
Tatiyana Thomas had two kills, three assists and two aces andÂ
Raiana Johnson had four blocks.
Briana Brown (eight digs),
Shatesa Harris (two kills, two digs) and
Breanna Edwards-Demars (two kills, four digs) were among the top performers for Miles, which plays next at Oakwood on Sept. 8. First serve is scheduled for 8 p.m.
