MEMPHIS, Tenn.-- Less than two weeks after a thrilling, double overtime classic that literally came down to the last second of the game, Miles and LeMoyne-Owen met again Saturday evening with the Lady Bears looking to reverse the outcome.
But the Lady Magicians took any suspense from the final outcome in the first half, using a blistering run to remove the need for late-game heroics in a 62-54 win over the Lady Bears at Bruce-Johnson Hall.
Taylor Terry continued her solid play of late (13 points, eight rebounds, three blocks) but it was not enough to keep Miles (6-13, 3-8 SIAC West) from dropping its fifth straight road contest.
With 5:49 left in the first quarter, an
Ashley McCrear bucket gave Miles a modest 8-5 lead. That's when LOC (11-9, 8-6) seized control. The Lady Magicians would go on a 20-1 run between the first and second quarters, the last 14 points uncontested. The Lady Bears missed 10 consecutive shots and turned the ball over eight times during the 11-minute stretch. A bucket by
Raiana Johnson with 4:37 left in the half ended the run but was just one of six hoops during the first 20 minutes that left Miles in a 31-15 hole at the break.
LeMoyne-Owen led by as many as 23 points with less than four minutes left in the third quarter. But Miles used an 11-3 run to close the quarter in arguably its best stretch of the game to that point. While the final outcome was not in doubt in the fourth quarter as the Lady Magicians led by as many as 18 points, the Lady Bears shot 57 percent (8-of-14) from the field over the last five minutes to give them something to build on going into their next game.
Dana Gattis had 21 points to pace the Lady Magicians. McCrear (11 points, six rebounds) and
Victoria Sutton (nine points, four assists) were among the leading scorers for Miles, who will play at Lane Monday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
