TUSKEGEE, Ala. -- After Miles opened a 24-point lead midway through the third quarter, there seemed little doubt the Lady Bears would avenge a Thursday loss to rival Tuskegee.
Then the Golden Tigerettes held Miles (8-14, 5-9 SIAC West) to just one basket in the fourth quarter and the Lady Bears had to go to the free throw line to close out a 62-57 win over Tuskegee (5-18, 4-11) Saturday at Chappie James Arena.
Jasmine Hollis had 20 points and eight rebounds, and
Taylor Terry added 17 points and eight rebounds in the win.Â
In the first quarter, it was Tuskegee that couldn't put the ball in the basket. The Golden Tigerettes made two of their first five shot attempts but then missed their last seven while turning the ball over five times to finish the period. Meanwhile, the Lady Bears took advantage, finishing the quarter on a 14-0 run to lead 20-4 at the end of the first. It was part of 18 unanswered points by Miles, the last coming on a layup by
Ashley McCrear that pushed the lead to 24-4 less than a minute into the second quarter.
Hollis and Terry were a two-person wrecking crew the entire first half. Hollis was 7-of-9 from the field and drained all three 3-pointers in scoring 18 points. Terry was 5-of-10 for her 10 points, including the last six points of the half as Miles went into the break with a 39-23 lead. The duo would score the first nine points of the second half for the Lady Bears, and when Shierkierra Nelson drained two free throws with 5:10 left in the third quarter, Miles led 50-26.
But Tuskegee went to full court pressure and Miles had trouble responding. After a bucket by Terry with 5:41 left in the third quarter, the Lady Bears would score just one more basket - a breakaway layup by
Victoria Sutton with 4:39 remainaing that gave the Lady Bears a 54-47 lead. The Golden Tigerettes would get as close as four points with 19 seconds left, but
Najla Shamsid-Deen hit 3-of-4 free throws to close the game, which bailed out a 10-of-19 performance from the charity stripe over the final 15 minutes of the contest.
Lena Yoonis had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead Tuskegee. McCrear had eight points, five assists and three steals and Sutton added seven points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals for Miles, which travels to Albany State on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
