Jasmine Hollis scored a game-high 19 points and Miles scored 26 points off of 27 Albany State turnovers in earning a wire-to-wire 68-53 win Saturday afternoon at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The victory was the third straight for the Lady Bears (6-1, 2-0 SIAC West), who handed the Golden Rams (3-8, 2-1 SIAC East) their first conference defeat.
Miles wasted little time asserting itself on both ends of the floor. Midway through the first quarter,
Mya Millner (six points) scored three consecutive baskets directly after steals to help the Lady Bears open a 15-8 advantage. The Lady Bears led by six points at the end of the first quarter but Hollis scored seven points to open the second quarter, the final two giving Miles a 26-16 lead.
Albany State was having no luck scoring the ball, making just one basket in the first six minutes of the second quarter as Miles opened a 16-point advantage. The Golden Rams shot just 15 percent from the field (2-of-13) during the period and the Lady Bears went into the half with a 34-19 lead.
Things never got better in the second half for the Golden Rams, who never got any closer than 13 points. Albany State was making substitutions five at a time but to no avail. Consecutive fourth quarter baskets by
Amoni Walker (seven points, three assists) - the last coming after a steal by
Najla Shamsid-Deen (10 points, three rebounds, four steals) started a fast break - pushed the lead over 20 points for the first time and when
Victoria Sutton (eight points) scored after a
Sakina Wynn (eight points, five assists, three steals) steal started the break, Miles grabbed its biggest lead - 67-43 - with 3:37 to go.
Uchemdirim Ibebunjo scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace Albany State.
Taylor Terry had seven points and a game-high nine rebounds for Miles, which hosts Fort Valley State on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
