The NCAA has scores for Miles basketball games dating back to the 1970-71 season. There are a few years that are missing but in the 39 seasons that have records, there have been four games where the Golden Bears have not allowed an opponent to reach 40 points.
Saturday became the first game where the team has not allowed 30 points.
The Golden Bears (5-3, 3-0 SIAC West) turned the screws on Albany State, allowing just four second-half baskets and holding the Golden Rams (3-7, 2-1 SIAC East) to 23 percent shooting from the field, in an impressive 56-29 win at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The Golden Bears pitched a shutout for almost 10 minutes to start the second half and turned a close game into a romp.
Miles came into the battle of teams with perfect conference records sporting the No. 1 defense in Division II, allowing just 55.9 points per game. The Golden Rams fell behind by 10 points in the first half but scored the final seven points of the period to go into the half down 22-19. They would miss their final shot before the break, which turned into a harbinger of the second half.
Albany State's run of futility continued with a missed 3-pointer by Jonathan Henderson to start the second half. There were nine more misses from there (and two turnovers) that came with it. Media timeouts came and went and the Golden Rams still had not even attempted a free throw to end the skid. Miles took full advantage. Five different players scored during the run, the final three coming on a 3-pointer by
Jelani Watson-Gayle and the lead had swelled to 17 points.
By the time Napoleon Harris scored with 10:39 left, the score was 36-21. But the Golden Bears were far from done. An
Umar Frost basket was sandwiched by two
Avery Brown 3-pointers to give Miles a 46-23 lead with 6:45 left. The lead would grow as large as 29 points, matching the total points Albany State scored all game, as the Golden Bears shot 58 percent from the field in the second half while holding the Golden Rams to 13 percent shooting.
Tyrell Williams had 16 points and six rebounds for Albany State. Brown (13 points, four assist),
Jose Roman-Angueria (11 points, eight rebounds) and
Devonte Fuller (nine points, six rebounds) were the top scorers for Miles, which hosts Fort Valley State Monday at 7:30 p.m.
