ATLANTA --
Taylor Terry scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds - both game highs - and Miles overcame a 10-point deficit in the first half to earn a 67-58 win over Clark Atlanta Saturday at Epps Gymnasium. It was the conference opener for both teams and with the win over the reigning SIAC champions, the Lady Bears (4-1, 1-0 SIAC West) are off to their best start this decade.
Clark Atlanta (0-6, 0-1 SIACÂ East) led 33-23 with 4:42 left in the second quarter but Miles forced the Panthers to miss four of their final five shots from the field and turn the ball over five times to end the period. When
Jasmine Hollis scored with 10 seconds remaining, it helped the Lady Bears go into the half trailing just 38-36.
In the third quarter,
Sakina Wynn took over for Miles. She scored 10 of her 11 points in the period, including a 3-point play with 4:15 left to give Miles the lead for good at 48-45. Meanwhile, the defense continued to make things difficult for CAU as the Panthers missed seven of its last eight shots in quarter and finished with just nine points during the period.
The officials made their presence felt throughout the game, calling 54 fouls between the two teams. It turned the fourth quarter into a free throw shooting contest with the only baskets by Miles (Terry and two by
Amoni Walker) sandwiching a CAU bucket with less than four minutes left. The Lady Bears would make 9-of-10 from the charity stripe (CAU would go 7-for-10) to seal the victory.
Jamila Mitchell scored 14 points to lead Clark Atlanta. Walker had 12 points and
Frantisha Tyson had six points and three steals for Miles, which plays again on Dec. 8 when it travels to play Mississippi College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
