Na'Kina Levingston and
Raiana Johnson each had eight kills and Miles hit .257 as a team in a straight-set win (25-19, 25-21, 25-11) Monday night over Oakwood University. The victory was the first this season for the Lady Bears (4-10) at Knox-Windham Gymnasium and completes a season sweep of the Lady Ambassadors.
Miles struggled to dispose of the Lady Ambassadors early, falling behind in each of the first two sets. Oakwood led 6-2 in the first set before the Lady Bears rallied. In the second set, Miles was down 8-2, then 16-10 before finally getting things moving in the right direction. Oakwood helped, making six consecutive errors to help the Lady Bears even the score before Levingston made three straight kills to break a 19-all tie en route to the win in the second set.
The final set was all Miles as Oakwood hit -.217. The Lady Bears opened with a 9-3 advantage, then exploded with 10 consecutive points to put the set and match out of reach. Overall, the Lady Ambassadors contributed to their demise, making more attack errors (18) than kills (16).
Conversely, Miles got solid efforts from Levingston (8-1-12, .538),
Raiana Johnson (8-1-16, .438, three blocks), and
Maiya Northard (5-2-9, .333, six digs).
Tatiyana Thomas had 23 assists and
D'Nautica Johnson had 10 digs for Miles, which opens play at the second Western Division Cluster on Thursday against host LeMoyne-Owen. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
