Less than three weeks after blowing a lead against then-winless Fort Valley State, Miles exacted a modicum of revenge Wednesday night at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
Jasmine Hollis had a career-high 24 points and nine rebounds and
Taylor Terry (11 points, 12 rebounds, three steals, two blocks) delivered her second straight double-double as the Lady Bears (6-11) defeated the Lady Wildcats 67-57. The game was a non-conference tilt for both SIACÂ squads but certainly helped Miles get past the sting from the disappointing loss at Fort Valley.
FVSUÂ (3-18) grabbed an early 8-2 lead but Miles slowly chipped away at the deficit. When
Symone Williams drained a 3-pointer right before the horn to end the first quarter, the Lady Bears went ahead 16-14. A 3-point play early in the second quarter by Nola Carter (29 points) briefly gave the Lady Wildcats a 21-20 advantage but
Darika Chelsey (career-high 15 points) buried one of her three 3-pointers on the ensuing possession to spur a 13-2 run. Miles would not trail again.
Hollis punished the short-handed Lady Wildcats throughout the first half as the Lady Bears made a concerted effort to feed her the ball in the post early. She faced consistent double teams but managed to drain 5-of-8 from the field for 15 points during the first 20 minutes. Once Hollis established the inside presence, Miles went outside to the freshman Chelsey, who hit two 3-pointers and scored 10 points as the Lady Bears took a 37-23 lead into the break.
Hollis and Chelsey continued to work magic in the third quarter. Another Chelsey 3-ball gave Miles a 48-25 lead and a bucket by Hollis less than a minute later helped match the 23-point advantage, which was the largest of the game. The Lady Wildcats tried to up the tempo in the fourth quarter in an effort to get back in the game, but FVSU would never close the deficit to less than 10 points.
Miles is back in action on Jan. 29, when it travels to Mobile, Ala. to take on Spring Hill College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
