Box Score 2
Columbus State used a big inning in each game of its doubleheader against Miles to earn a sweep, 8-4 and 5-1, Wednesday at Parker High School Field.
Zakierra Webb and
Kathryne Lambert each had three hits over the two games but it was not enough to keep the Lady Golden Bears (4-22) from dropping their fourth straight contest.
GAME 1: Columbus State 8, Miles 4
The Cougars' (22-14-1) first four hitters reached base to give them a lead but the big blow was a 3-run home run by Elizabeth Perdue that gave CSU a 5-0 advantage before Miles got a chance to hit. But when the Lady Bears came to bat, the went right to work. The first four hitters reached base with Lambert knocking in Webb to cut into the deficit. But Miles would not score again with
Jordan Jones just missing a grand slam when her two-out drive was caught at the fence in center field.
Miles starter
Jakari Suggs settled down after the first, allowing a solo home run in the top of the fourth, but otherwise keeping the Cougars at bay. Meanwhile, the offense came alive again in the fifth.
Kendruena McPherson and Lambert each drove in runs as part of a three-run inning to cut the Lady Bears deficit to 6-4. But three errors in the seventh led to two CSU runs that put a comeback out of reach for Miles.
GAME 2: Columbus State 5, Miles 1
Savanna Turvy had two home runs to center off McPherson, a solo shot in the second to put the Cougars on the board and a 2-run blast that capped a four-run third and gave CSU a 5-0 lead.
Miles was having trouble just getting a hit against CSU starter Harley Dawson. The the only two base runners over the first four innings were on a
Davis Watkins walk in the second and McPherson getting hit by a pitch in the fourth. The no-hitter was broken up on a one-out single by
Aishawyra Smith in the fifth. She would score on a CSU error to get the Lady Bears on the board but with only four hits the entire game, Miles was not able to compile enough offense to get back in the game.
