With two wins over Fort Valley State this season, Miles' women's basketball team was confident that it could get back into the win column during the quarterfinal matchup at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Basketball Championships.

But after jumping out to an early lead, it all fell apart for the Lady Golden Bears in an 81-65 loss to the Lady Wildcats Thursday afternoon at the Bill Harris Arena at Birmingham CrossPlex. Morgan Hardy had 16 points and 17 rebounds for Miles (14-13), which saw its four-game win streak, and season, end. Shekiya Tarpkins had 32 points, eight rebounds and five assists for FVSU (10-16).

Miles was active early, forcing turnovers and knocking down shots in scoring the first eight points of the contest and opening a 15-5 lead with less than two minutes left in the first quarter. But a 15-3 run by the Lady Wildcats that stretched into the second quarter erased the entire deficit. A basket by Ashley McCrear - who eviscerated FVSU last month in a 32-point performance but had just six points today - put the Lady Bears on top 27-26 with five minutes left before halftime. But another extended run by Fort Valley, this one a 14-4 jaunt, put it ahead 40-31 and the Lady Bears would never regain the lead.

The third quarter saw FVSU open a double-digit lead but the Lady Bears continued to claw back. Two free throws by Victoria Sutton had cut the Miles deficit to four points. But the ensuing possession saw the Lady Bears get called for a foul and have a technical foul added. After Tarpkins nailed all four free throws, the lead had doubled and Miles would not get closer than six points the rest of the way. In fact, the Lady Wildcats held a double-digit advantage the entire fourth quarter.

Daknequa White had 22 points, six rebounds and five steals for Fort Valley State. Larian Scott had 15 points, Sutton scored 10 points, and Alexis Jones added nine points for Miles.
