JASPER, Ala. -- One tough inning kept the Miles softball team from taking two games on the first day of the SIAC Crossover at Memorial Park. The Lady Golden Bears beat Clark Atlanta 10-2 in the first game but dropped a 6-2 decision in the second game to Albany State. Kathryne Lambert had three hits, Victoria McDaniel scored three runs and Kendruena McPherson stole three bases over the two games for Miles.

GAME 1: Miles 10, Clark Atlanta 2 (5)

Miles (2-16, 1-0 SIAC) scored in every inning and McPherson allowed just two hits as the Lady Bears snapped an eight-game losing streak with a run-rule win over the Panthers (9-13, 5-1).

CAU scored a run in the top of the first but Lambert tied the game with a run-scoring double that plated McPherson. The Panthers went back in front in the second but RBI from McPherson and Kendal Burrell were part of a three-run third that gave Miles the lead for good.

The Lady Bears broke the game open with a five-run fourth. Zakierra Webb, Aishawrya Smith, Lambert and Burrell drovve in runs during the frame as Miles set a high mark from runs scored in a game this season. McPherson did the rest from the circle. While she walked five, she only allowed two singles to Chase Gray-Still in earning her first win of the season.

GAME 2: Albany State 6, Miles 2

Miles led by one run late but the Golden Rams (9-14, 5-2) scored five times in the bottom of the sixth to down the Golden Bears (2-17, 1-1).

McDaniel put Miles on the board with a one-out single that scored Jordan Jones. After Albany State tied the game in the fourth, the Lady Bears went back in front in the sixth when McPherson blasted a double to the gap in right center that scored McDaniel for a 2-1 advantage. But it all fell apart in the bottom of the frame. After tying the game, Toni Coleman smoked a pinch-hit double to the left field corner that gave the Golden Rams a 4-2 lead. An error led to two more runs that provided the final margin.

Grayson Culverson pitched well despite the defeat, allowing just three earned runs and striking out five over six innings.
