Golden Bears look to celebrate on Senior Day

Miles has won two straight games but knows it must stay on the winning track when it hosts Lane Saturday at Albert J. Sloan Alumni Stadium. The Golden Bears must win out in order to secure a spot in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship game in four weeks.

The Golden Bears will celebrate Senior Day as 13 seniors will be recognized for their contributions to the program, which include a SIAC championship in 2015. This senior class still has an opportunity to add one more title to its ledger but will have to defeat the Dragons, who have not earned a win over Miles since 2008.

Lane opened the season with a win at Texas College but has not visited the win column since. They will look to break a six-game skid after falling behind early and struggling to recover in a 37-14 loss to Fort Valley State. The Dragons fell behind 31-0 to the Wildcats and have not held the lead in a game since the fourth quarter of their loss to Benedict…more than 250 minutes in game time. They are paced by running back Marcus Holliday, a 2016 All-SIAC selection, who has 515 rushing yards and three touchdowns, two which came in the loss to FVSU.

Behind the stout running of junior running back Justin Hardy and a stingy defense, Miles pitched a Homecoming shutout for the second straight year in a win over Kentucky State. Hardy, the leading rusher in the SIAC, has run for 388 yards and five touchdowns over the past two weeks as the Golden Bears have gone over the .500 mark for the first time this season. Junior wide receiver Antonio Lee has caught touchdown passes in the last two games and freshman quarterback Joseph Cambridge has thrown for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns in his first two games under center for the Golden Bears. Defensively, linebacker Austin Stephens and Anthony Hardy continue to pace Miles in tackles while Kaelan Bonds and MarQuel Shelton share the sack lead with six each.

Special teams may also make a big difference in the contest. Senior Nick Christiansen earned SIAC Special Teams Player of the Week for the second straight week and is among the top kickers in the country in field goals made (nine) and field goal percentage (.900). His 52-yard field goal against Albany State is the longest in the SIAC this season and tied for the fifth-longest in Division II this season. But both teams like to block kicks and punts as Miles (five total) and Lane (four) lead the conference in that category.
