Triple the fun
Box Score
Using a barrage of 3-pointers, Miles won for the third time in four games after completely handling Albany State 91-73 Saturday afternoon at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
Led by
Sheldon Wright and
Eric Dansby, the Golden Bears (3-16, 3-5 SIAC) made 10 treys against the Golden Rams (9-10, 4-5). In Miles three conference wins, they have made 29 3-point field goals, are shooting over 41 percent from the 3-point line and are averaging more than 88 points per game.
Miles took the lead for good when Wright and Dansby nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Golden Bears a 14-8 advantage. Dansby wasn't finished as he kept stroking from deep. His third of four first-half triples put the Golden Rams in a 31-17 hole with 6:33 left. Albany State, though, would claw back to within three but an
Aron Stewart (six points, five rebounds four blocks) dunk gave Miles a 41-35 halftime lead.
The Golden Bears came out the gates hot in the second half, scoring the first seven points - punctuated by a
Joshua Samuels 3-ball. The outside shooting opened the inside up for
Shaquille Cook to get a lot of one-on-one matchups and he took complete advantage. He scored 16 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and added three assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
With shots falling from all angles (Miles shot 50 percent from the field, including a 57 percent clip in the second half), it became pick-your-poison time for Albany State and Wright was serving lethal doses. He pulled up on a fast break to nail one 3-ball, then came down and drained another on the next possession to give Miles a 62-43 lead inside of 12 minutes remaining. He would make another in the half and finish with four for the game to score 16 points.
Even Malcolm Snyder, in his first appearance in a Golden Bears uniform, got in on the act. He knocked down a long jumper on his first shot attempt, then made it rain from downtown with 1:20 remaining to give Miles a 87-65 lead. Albany State would trail by as many as 23 late before getting the deficit under 20 in the final seconds.
Randy McClure had 17 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots for Albany State. Dansby scored 14 points, Samuels added 11 and
Henrique Cistrunk had seven points and eight rebounds for Miles, which hosts Fort Valley State on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
