Three games produced the same result for Miles' softball team as Spring Hill College (34-14, 21-0 SIAC West) swept the Golden Bears 8-0, 6-0, and 6-3 on Sunday and Monday. The loss was the sixth straight for Miles (13-32, 12-6 SIAC West) and the fourth consecutive conference defeat.
Game 1: SHC 8, Miles 0 (6 innings)
Kendruena McPhereson's third-inning single was the only safety the Golden Bears could muster as the Badgers won this game by the 8-run rule in six innings. Miles had runners at second and third in the second and fourth innings but failed to capitalize both times.
The game was scoreless until the third inning when SHC scored three times, then added three more in the fourth against
Karla Kennedy, who allowed 11 hits and seven earned runs. The Badgers would score single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to earn the early stoppage.
Game 2: SHC 6, Miles 0
If there was ever a game of missed opportunities, this game would definitely qualify for the Golden Bears in a second consecutive shutout. Miles had a runner reach third base in four separate innings - three times with less than two outs - and failed to bring any of them home. It was especially disheartening in the third and fourth innings when Miles would hit into double plays to snuff out any rally.
The defense, on the other hand, made it tough to stay in the game, committing five errors that led to three unearned runs. McPhereson took the loss in the circle, giving up eight hits and three earned runs in the defeat.
Game 3: SHC 6, Miles 3
The offense showed more signs of life in the finale but the Badgers were able to remain unbeaten in SIAC play with the third straight win. Down 1-0 in the first, an RBI single by
Jordan Jones tied the contest. But Spring Hill continued to tack on runs against McPhereson and
Talana Brown and took a 6-1 advantage into the bottom of the seventh.
With two outs,
Victoria McDaniel ripped a 2-out, 2-run double to center that scored McPhereson and
Madison Westbrook. But
Jamellya Ducker popped out to first base to end the game, sending Miles to another defeat.
