Softball gains split with West Alabama
Miles only scored in two of the 14 innings it played Wednesday afternoon in a doubleheader against West Alabama but it was enough to earn a split. The Golden Bears (7-16) dropped the opener 9-3 but came back to take the nightcap 3-1.
Jamellya Ducker had four hits and drove in two runs during the doubleheader and
Talana Brown pitched five inning in the nightcap to earn the vicotry as Miles has now won seven of its last eight after starting the season 0-15.
West Alabama 9, Miles 3Kendruena McPhereson struggled in the circle but did not gt a lot of help from her defense as the Tigers grabbed a big lead and cruised to the opening-game win. UWA lead 3-0 going into the fourth but scored four times in the fourth to break the game open. An error by McPhereson on a sacrifice attempt allowed the first run to score but the big blow was a two-out, 2-run double by Ashley Stassin which pushed the Golden Bears into a 7-0 hole.
Miles would get on the board in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, a run-scoring single by Ducker brought home McPhereson for the first run before
Ashlee Alexander doubled to score
Aishawyra Smith and Ducker. The Golden Bears had an opportunity to do more damage but
Madison Westbrook grounded out with two runners on to end the threat. UWA would tack on two more runs in the fifth to finish the scoring.
Miles 3, West Alabama 1Thee Golden Bears wasted no time getting on the board in the nightcap, scoring three times in the bottom of the first and making those runs hold up. Ducker walked with the bases loaded to score McPhereson with the first run. Smith would then single home
Victoria McDaniel and
Kathryne Lambert to up the lead to 3-0.
Miles was unable to di much else offensively but it did not matter as Brown mowed down the Tigers. She entered in relief in the third inning after UWA scored a run against starter
Brea Reese. She allowed just two hits and strruck out four, the last coming on the final out of the game to earn the split.
UP NEXTMiles puts its perfect 6-0 conference record on the line when it hosts Tuskegee. The two teams open a 3-game set on Friday with a single game at 4 p.m.
