The third time was a charm for Miles' women's basketball team Monday night, riding a red-hot first quarter and an equally blistering second half to a 69-41 annihilation of Tuskegee in the opening round of the SIAC Basketball Championships at Bill Harris Arena. Ashley Steger had 16 points and four assists for the Golden Bears (16-11), who advance to the quarterfinals on Thursday at 1 p.m. against the winner of Tuesday's Claflin-LeMoyne-Owen tilt.

The win was the third this season for the Golden Bears against Tuskegee (5-20) and none was more decisive than the final. Miles scored the first 12 points of the game, getting 3-pointers from Steger, Tierra Williams and Torborsha Holley, and led by as many as 17 points in the opening quarter. Tuskegee made just one field goal in the opening quarter and trailed 20-4 after the first 10 minutes. The Golden Tigerettes mad a run in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 26-21 with three minutes left before halftime. But Miles got two more triples from Steger and led by eight at halftime.

The Golden Bears put Tuskegee out of its misery in the third quarter, holding it without a field goal over the last 5:50 of the period. During that stretch, Miles closed out the quarter on a 12-1 run to put the game well out of reach. That did not stop the Golden Bears from piling on in the fourth, with reserve Amoni Walker draining a couple of 3-pointers in the final quarter as part of her 12-point effort.

Rachel Brownlee scored 13 points and Demetries McNealey added 12 for Tuskegee. Holley had 15 points, Javonne Brown added nine and Sahquinta Sales had seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Golden Bears.
