Miles drops first SIAC contest at Benedict

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- An early hole was too tough for Miles' women's basketball team to dig itself from Monday night as the Lady Golden Bears lost to Benedict 71-62.

The loss was the first in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play for Miles (8-5, 3-1) as the Lady Tigers (14-1, 4-1) led by 10 points at the end of the first quarter and never allowed the Lady Golden Bears to get any closer than five points the rest of the way. Larian Scott and Tierra Williams each had 14 points to pace Miles while Terri Jacobs had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Benedict.

Benedict took control in the first quarter by holding Miles to just one field goal over the final 6:23 in grabbing a 23-13 advantage. Miles was able to get within five points late in the second quarter and when Ashley Steger scored right before the horn, the Lady Golden Bears were only trailing 34-28 at the half.

Miles trailed by seven after a Javonne Brown bucket less than two minutes into the third quarter when Benedict practically buried the Lady Golden Bears. A backbreaking 10-0 that featured two missed shots and three turnovers for Miles gave the Lady Tigers a 49-32 advantage. Benedict would lead by as many as 18 in the fourth quarter before Miles ended the game with a 9-0 run.

Regime McCombs had 10 points for Benedict while Shaquinta Sales had nine points and a team-high eight rebounds for Miles, which hosts Central State on Jan. 14 at 5:30 p.m.
