AUGUSTA. Ga. -- It has been nearly a decade since Miles has been the victor against the Paine Lions.

But this Miles team has shown that it is starkly different that part incarnations. Using an efficient team approach, the Golden Bears shot 60 percent from the field and 50 percent from the 3-point line to dispatch Paine 97-90 Monday night at HEAL Complex. Six players scored in double figures for Miles (10-9, 8-2 SIAC), led by Maiscei Grier's 19 and Joshua Samuels' 18. The Lions, who beat the Golden Bears by 27 points last season, fall to 4-15 overall, 1-9 in league play.

It took a while for Miles to dispatch Paine. The Golden Bears built a 10-point lead in the first half, only to see it shrink to 45-44 by halftime. Down by three early in the second half, the Lions use a 10-0 run to take a 62-55 lead with just more than 13 minutes remaining.

A loss on the road to a team that has owned this series as of late would not have been a complete shock. But shortly after that point, Miles put together one of its best stretches of basketball this season. The Golden Bears would make 12-of-17 shots from the field during a 10-minute stretch that iced the game. The Lions would go 2-for-11 with three turnovers during the same time frame. When E. Reginald Smalls (10 points) followed his 3-pointer with another jumper, Miles led 85-70 and was on its way to victory.

Patrick Petty scored a game-high 20 points for Paine. Eric Halliwell had 11 points and six rebounds while Shaquille Cook (10 points, six rebounds) and Hasain Bunnell (10 points, seven rebounds) also had strong performances for Miles, which travels to play Albany State on Thursday. Tip-off is sceduled for 6:30 p.m.
