Miles set for basketball doubleheader
Miles' men and women's basketball teams look to keep their resurgent seasons in motion when they host a doubleheader against LeMoyne-Owen Thursday night at the Bill Harris Arena at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The women tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will start at approximately 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12.
The men's team currently sits tied atop the West Division standings at 6-1, which is the best league record among team in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. But the Golden Bears have little room for error as they are tied with Stillman and just ahead of the Magicians, who enter with a 5-3 conference mark.
Miles is paced by the scoring duo of Joshua Samuels (17.1 points per game) and
Maiscei Grier (15.8), who have helped the Golden Bears atop the SIAC in 3-point shooting percentage (.402) and fourth in scoring (81.4). LeMoyne-Owen, though, also features a prolific scoring duo in the Justin Street and Rashawn Brown, who are both in the top-5 in the league in scoring.
The Lady Golden Bears (8-7, 3-3) will look to snap a 3-game skid and push back above the .500 mark in conference play. The Lady Magicians (4-11, 2-5) have also dropped three straight and 6-of-7.
Shaquinta Sales has been hot for Miles, averaging 12. 6 points and 9.8 rebounds while shooting 56 percent over the last five games. During that same stretch,
Larian Scott - the team's leading scorer - is averaging 14 points per contest. LeMoyne-Owen's top scorer, Teresa Mays, is eighth in the conference in scoring at 14.1 points per game.
Thursday will mark the third time Miles' men's team has played at the Bill Harris arena this season and the first opportunity for the women. Both teams will get another chance to play at their "home away from home" during the regular season when they host Tuskegee on Feb. 22.
