Lady Golden Bears drop third straight
Box Score Miles dropped its third consecutive game on Saturday, coming out on the short end of a 79-71 decision against Kentucky State at Knox-Windham Gymnsaium.
Shaquinta Sales posted a double-double (17 points, 11 rebounds) and
Larian Scott and
Tierra Williams each scored 18 points off the bench for the Lady Golden Bears.
While the Lady Golden Bears (8-7, 3-3 SIAC) certainly can't be happy about dropping three consecutive conference games, it doesn't take much to see where they continue to have an issue. In each of the losses, Miles has let one terrible quarter dictate the outcome of the game. Against the Thorobrettes (11-3, 6-2), it was the second period that put the Lady Golden Bears in a big hole.
Ahead 13-12 at the end of the first quarter, KSU opened the second quarter on a 13-2 run, holding Miles without a basket for nearly six minutes while opening up a double-digit lead. The Thorobrettes outscored the Lady Golden Bears 25-12 that quarter to put Miles in a deep hole from which it could not recover. Over the other three quarters, Miles outscored KSU by five points.
Kentucky State led by as many as 14 points in the second half but Miles continued to fight. A 3-pointer by Williams brought the Lady Golden Bears to within five points, 72-67, with just less than two minutes remaining in the contest. But Miles would not make another basket the rest of the contest while KSU would close out the game making 7-of-8 free throws to seal the victory.
Joymesia Howard had 22 points and 12 rebounds and Jamesha Mosley added 18 points for Kentucky State.
Ashley Steger had seven points and three rebounds for Miles, which hosts LeMoyne-Owen Thursday night at the Bill Harris Arena at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
