Miles Can't Make Magicians Disappear
Box Score On several occassions, it looked as if Miles was going to runaway and hide from LeMoyne-Owen on Monday night. The Golden Bears had small leads in both halves, shot relatively well from the field and free throw line, and outrebounded the bigger Magicians 46-35.
But even with five players scoring in double figures, Miles could not protect the ball and find a way to keep LeMoyne-Owen from getting easy baskets. Fourteen Golden Bears turnovers led to 24 points for the Magicians, who held on for a 91-87 win at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
Maiscei Grier had 15 points off the bench and
William Gray added 10 points and seven assists for Miles (2-18, 1-12 SIAC). Byron Ray scored 19 points to lead five players in double figures for the Magicians (12-9, 8-4).Â
Miles used a quick 7-0 burst late in the first half to grab a four-point advantage but LOC was able to tie the game at 36 by halftime. The back-and-forth battle, which featured nine ties and nine lead changes, seemed to rock in Miles' favor when
Patrick Jackson (14 points) drained a 3-pointer with 13:39 remaining to give the Golden Bears a 51-46 lead. Miles would cough up the lead four minutes later but with 4:41 to go, a
Larry Butler (five points, five rebounds, two blocks)Â bucket knotted the game at 70.
LeMoyne-Owen, though, would score the next five points to take the lead for good. A 3-pointer by Grier with 1:03 remaining would cut the Miles deficit to 79-77. But the Magicians would close the game making 12-of-14 free throws to finish off the Golden Bears.
Alexander Andrews had 14 points and six rebounds and
Tavin Cummings added 13 points and four rebounds for the Golden Bears, who play at Tuskegee on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m.
