Overtime Unkind to Golden Bears
Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Another late lead for Miles turns into another stinging defeat.
The Golden Bears lost a six-point cushion with less than a minute to go and ran out of gas in overtime as Kentucky State galloped away with an 85-80 win over Miles Saturday afternoon at the Exum Center. Tavin Cummins scored a team-high 22 points and added five rebounds for Miles (2-22, 1-16 SIAC), which lost for the second consecutive game after holding a lead with less than 30 seconds to go in regulation.
KSU (8-15, 6-10 SIAC) led by 14 points with 12:19 to go in regulation but Miles' defense put the clamps on the Thorobreds. The Golden Bears held their opponents without a field goal for nearly the next eight minutes and took the lead. Two Cummings free throws with 57 seconds left gave Miles a 71-65 lead and a season sweep seemed in the offing. But a Malcolm Smith (13 points) 3-point play with 17 seconds left tied the game at 73.
Maiscei Grier's (16 points, seven rebounds) jumper as time expired came up short and the two teams were headed to overtime.
In the extra period, Miles made only two baskets, both by
Patrick Jackson (10 points). KSU only made two field goals as well, its last being a 3-pointer by Tryston Ford (game-high 24 points) that gave it the lead for good at 80-77. But the biggest difference was from the free throw line, where Miles missed 5-of-8 while the Thorobreds made 7-of-8. For the game, the Golden Bears were 16-of-31 (52 perccent) while the Thorobreds shot 33-of-43 (73 percent).
Darrien Wilkins scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for KSU.
Aron Stewart had nine points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots forr Miles, which looks to end its seven-game losing streak Monday when it faces LeMoyne-Owen. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
