Late comeback pushes Miles past Clark Atlanta
Box Score Miles had a disasterous fourth quarter against Clark Atlanta Saturday afternoon at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The team went the last 7:54 of the game without a made basket from the field but still found a way to get a win in its Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.
The Lady Golden Bears watched an eight-point lead evaporate and trailed by five with 1:14 remaining but closed the game on a 9-1 run to earn a 56-53 win over the Panthers.
Torborsha Holley scored a team-high 14 points and
Morgan Hardy had nine points and a game-high 14 reboundsÂ
for Miles (3-2, 1-0 SIAC), which overcame 29 percent shooting from the floor and 16 turnovers.
Defensively, Miles was just as solid, keeping CAU (1-7, 0-1 SIAC) under 31 percent from the field, forcing 12 turnovers and holding a 50-43 advantage on the glass. They needed each of those assets, plus an advantage from the free throw line, over the last minute to secure the victory.
Down 52-47, the Golden Bears never took another official shot from the field. But Miles kept finding its way to the charity stripe and took advanatage. Tierra Williams made 1-of-2 from the line and Larian Scott added two more freebies to cut the deficit to 52-50. The Panthers would make 1-of-2 from the line but Brittany Smith would get fouled on the other end and make both of her free throws to make the score 53-52.
Clark Atlanta would turn the ball over on the inbounds and Miles, again, was fouled. Scott went back to the free throw line and made them both, giving the Golden Bears a 54-53 advantage with 18 seconds remaining. CAU would miss a jumper on its next possession, get the offensive rebound and was fouled. But Sydni Davis missed both free throws and Hardy pulled down the miss. Holley would get fould and go to the line, knocking down both for a three-point lead. A desperation 3-pointer wasn't close for CAU and Miles escaped with the victory.
Mykala Jones had 20 points and Davis added 15 for Clark Atlanta. Williams, Scott and Shaquinta Sales each had six points for Miles, which hosts Middle Georgia on Monday. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
