After playing five games this season that were all close into the final minutes, it was nice for Miles' men's basketball team to have a little breathing room coming down the stretch.

E. Reginald Smalls scored a game-high 21 points and the Golden Bears' defense put the clamps on Clark Atlanta, coasting to an 88-56 win Saturday afternoon at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The win was the third straight for Miles (4-2, 2-0 SIAC), which is also perfect in conference play.

"To be honest it's a collective effort defensively, we're getting better defensively and that's the best thing, we're able to grow as a unit," said Maiscei Grier, who came off the bench and scored 17 points.

Miles never trailed and used a 19-2 run midway through the first half to take a substantial lead. CAU (0-7, 0-1 SIAC) made only nine baskets and shot 25 percent from the floor in the first half as the Golden Bears lead 45-21 at the break. The Panthers were dominated on the boards (58-37) and Miles was able to push its lead as high as 33 points on several occasions in the second half. The final score came on Grier's third 3-pointer as the final horn sounded.

Tim Sanders scored 13 points to pace the Panthers. Shaquille Cook had 10 points and Eric Halliwell had eight points and eight rebounds for Miles, which opens the Miles Classic against Columbus State on Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
