Scott leads Lady Golden Bears past Spring Hill
Box Score MOBILE, Ala. -- Last season, Miles did not win consecutive games in limping to an 8-19 finish. But a new season has brought new expectations and thus far, the Lady Golden Bears are meeting them.
Led by
Larian Scott's 17 points off the bench, Miles won its fourth straight contest Monday night, taking a 64-60 win over Spring Hill College.
Javonne Brown, who missed most of last season with a knee injury, came up big for the Lady Golden Bears (5-2, 2-0 SIAC), scoring all 12 of her points after halftime to help quell any comeback by the Badgers (2-6, 1-1).
Miles fell in a quick hole early but used a 13-1 run to take a lead it would not relinquish. The Lady Bears used Scott and
Brittney Smith (nine points, four rebounds, three assists) to attack the basket before flipping it outside to
Tierra Williams (nine points), whose 3-pointer gave Miles a 13-7 lead with 2:36 left in the opening quarter. The defense was solid over the opening 20 minutes, forcing 12 turnovers that turned in 13 points and helped the team to a 29-23 lead at the half.
Spring Hill would continue to battle in the second half but the Golden Bears had the answer each time. After the Badgers cut the lead to 36-33 midway through the third quarter, Miles did not allow a basket for the next four minutes. During that span, the lead would grow as large as 10 points on a layup by Smith with just under four minutes remaining in the third quarter. SHC got as close as 45-44 early in the fourth quarter but Brown and
Torborsha Holley (six points) would combine to score the next 13 points for Miles to help keep the Badgers at bay.
Brittney Davis scored 17 points and Leah Washington had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Spring Hill.
Shaquinta Sales added nine points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks for Miles, which next plays Nova Southeastern in the Shark Holiday Classic on Saturday with tip-off scheduled at 1 p.m.
