AUGUSTA, Ga. – Miles and Paine are two teams going in different directions during the early portions of the 2014-15 campaign. While the Lions are trending upward, the Golden Bears are still looking to turn around their early-season struggles.

The change of pace did not come Monday night at the HEAL Complex for Miles, which dropped its eighth straight contest in an 82-55 defeat to Paine, which has now won six straight. Maiscei Grier scored a team-high 15 points and Albert Peterson had 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for the Golden Bears.

Miles (1-8, 0-2 SIAC) played well in the opening moments of the first half. A 3-pointer by Grier with 12:20 remaining gave the Golden Bears an early 10-5 lead. From there, futility from the field put Miles in a big hole. It would be nearly five minutes before another basket – a Peterson 3-pointer – and more than six minutes before the next bucket, also by Peterson. Paine (6-3, 2-0) had no such troubles, going into the half with a 35-19 advantage.

It did not get much better in the second half for the Golden Bears, who offered little resistance to Paine in the paint. The Lions shot 50 percent on 2-point baskets in the second half with 9-of-10 field goals coming in the paint. Overall, Paine dominated the glass as well, outrebounding Miles 46-28. The Golden Bears trailed by as many as 33 points in the second half as the Lions coasted to victory.

Denzel Dillingham (22 points, 10 rebounds) and Arnis Libazs (10 points, 13 rebounds) each had double-doubles for Paine. Patrick Jackson had six points, five rebounds and three assists for Miles, which plays its conference home opener Thursday against Clark Atlanta, Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
