Another Cold Spell Costs Miles
Box Score MOBILE, Ala. -- Despite its record, the Miles women's basketball team has looked the part of a contender during portions of the 2014-15 basketball season.
At the outset of their contest against Spring Hill College Monday night, the Lady Golden Bears played like a team that profiles as a SIAC titlist. But a disastrous run late in the first half put the team in whole from which they could not recover, falling 57-49. The loss was the third straight for Miles (2-10, 1-6), which has yet to win a game on the road this season.
Porshia Blue scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds but struggled from the floor, missing 15-of-18 shots from the field. As a team, Miles had a tough night shooting the ball, connecting on just 26.7 percent of it attempts. While both teams had trouble handling the ball (19 turnovers each), SHC (8-7, 5-2) turned the Lady Golden Bears' miscues into 20 points and outscored them by nine in that department.
Miles led 22-16 when
Ebony McNeill (seven points, three assists) scored with 5:11 left in the first half. From there, though, things went downhill. The Lady Golden Bears missed each of their four shot attempts and turned the ball over five times as the Badgers went on a 13-0 run. Blue scored at the buzzer to end the run but Spring Hill still led 29-24 at halftime.
Ashley Steger (10 points) opened the second half with a 3-pointer and her layup with 12:25 remaining had the Lady Golden Bears within 39-34. But an 8-1 run gave Spring Hill its biggest lead four minutes later and Miles would never get closer than the final margin.
Leah Washington had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Badgers.
Joidon Jennings added two points and nine rebounds for Miles, which is off until Jan. 26 when it hosts Stillman at Bill Harris Arena. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
