Second Half Meltdown Dooms Lady Golden Bears
Box Score FORT VALLEY, Ga. -- Miles never held the lead in its 79-42 loss to Fort Valley State Thursday night. But what was a competitive game through the first 20 minutes turned into a rout in the second half as the Lady Golden Bears could not find the basket while the Lady Wildcats seemingly could not miss it.
Reigning SIAC Player of the Week
Porshia Blue scored a team-high 16 points and added 11 rebounds for Miles (2-8, 1-4) but no one else scored in double figures. The Lady Golden Bears shot just 23 percent from the field for the game, but that number was helped because the team shot better than 30 percent in the first half. Brittnee Hazel had 21 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots to pace FVSU (6-11, 4-2).
Down 32-24 at halftime, Miles went into a shooing funk that lasted the remainder of the game. Only Blue and
Ashley Steger (four points) made baskets over the first 14 minutes of the second half. During that time, the Lady Wildcats - who shot 49 percent from the field for the game - had opened up an insurmountable 32-point advantage. The Lady Golden Bears had just seven field goals in the second half and shot a paltry 17.5 percent from the floor. Blue scored 10 of the team's 18 second-half points. Meanwhile, Tonisha Wilson - who did not take a shot in the first half - came off the bench for FVSU to drain four 3-pointers and score 16 points by herself.
Thursday's loss marked a season-low in points scored and largest margin of defeat for the Lady Golden Bears.
Ebony McNeill had nine points and three assists for Miles, which will look to stop its two-game skid Saturday at Albany State. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
