FAIRFIELD, AL –
The Golden Bears opened the 2014 campaign with a convincing victory over Shaw University, 30-6, behind a dominating performance by redshirt-sophomore Jonathan Clark who finished with 212 rushing yards.

MC improves to (1-0, 0-0 SIAC) while Shaw drops to (0-1, 0-0 CIAA).

Miles College wasted little time getting on the board as they used an 8-play, 39 yard drive on their second possession of the first quarter capped by a seven yard touch down pass from senior quarterback Demetric Price to fellow senior Antonio Pitts giving the Golden Bears the early 7-0 lead.

On the first play of the second quarter Clark sprinted into the endzone for a 73 yard touchdown run extending the MC lead to 14-0. The Golden Bears weren't done there, as sophomore transfer, Xaver Bacon, would score the first of two touchdowns with only eight seconds remaining in the half extending the lead to 21-0 going into locker rooms.

The Golden Bears quick strike rushing attack did not take long to extend their lead as Bacon scampered into the endzone from 21 yards out on 3-play, 30 yard drive that took only 1:18 extending the lead to 28-0.

Shaw University would finally put some points on the board as Trey Folston hit Kowaski Kitchens on a 31 yard strike cutting the lead to 28-6. The celebration would be short lived as Ian Burress's extra-point was blocked and returned 98 yards for the two-point conversion by Roderick Holloman, closing out the scoring and giving MC the 30-6 lead.

The Golden Bears offense was led by Clark's 212 yards on only 16 attempts and one touchdown. Price finished 14-of-25 passing for 119 yards and one TD pass.

Defensively MC was led by Holloman, who was filling in for SIAC pre-season Defensive Player of the Year, Julantate English. He finished with 12 tackles (7 solo), 2.5 tackles for loss, and one forced fumble.  Also having outstanding performances on defense were Alfonza Edwards who finished with nine tackles and Braysean Jones who tallied eight total tackles and a team-high 3.0 tackles for loss.

The Miles offense dominated with 463 yards of total offense to Shaw's 203. The Golden Bear defense also held all-CIAA selection Marquis Grizzle to only 22 yards on 10 carries.

Miles College returns to action next Saturday, September 13th as they host the University of West Georgia. Kick-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
