GOLDEN BEARS BATTLE BUT FALL SHORT ON ROAD TO HAMPTON, 34-30
Box Score HAMPTON, VA – The Golden Bears went on the road for the first time in 2014 and came up just short as they fell, 34-30, to FCS and MEAC Conference member the Pirates of Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia in front of 5,000 fans in Armstrong Stadium.
HU improves to 1-3 while Miles College falls to 1-2.
MC would draw first blood when senior quarterback, Demetric Price, connected with fellow senior,
Antonio Pitts, on a 16-yard touchdown strike capping a six play, 65 yard drive giving the Golden Bears the early 7-0 lead.
The score remained the same until the second quarter when Hampton cut the lead to 7-3 on an Anthony Provost 23-yard field goal. The Pirates would add to the lead and go into the half with a 10-7 advantage after quarterback Bryan Bailey found Morris Brailsford in the endzone for the score.
Miles would tie the score early in the third quarter when sophomore kicker,
Jason Coste, kicked a 42-yard field goal knotting the game at 10-10.
The Pirates would go on-top shortly after on a one yard plunge by Jorrian Washington making the score 17-10. Just before the end of the 3
rd quarter Golden Bears freshman running back, Jamarcus Hill scampered into the endzone from eight yards out tying the score at 17-17.
Hampton would capitalize on MC mistakes and extend the lead to 31-17 on an 18-yard pass to SeQuan Gooding and a 25-yard pass to Rashawn Proctor by Bailey.
The Golden Bears continued to battle and cut the lead to 31-24 as Price again connected with Pitts this time on a 25-yard strike. Another Provost field goal (29-yards) would give the Pirates a two score cushion at 34-24.
Miles closed out the scoring as Price found,
Michael Ross, in the corner of the endzone fore an 11-yard touchdown with only two seconds remaining in the game making the final score 34-30.
The Golden Bears outgained the Pirates (473-411) in total yardage and also lead in first downs (24-21).
Miles was led offensively but Price who finished the day completing 19-of-34 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns. On the ground Sophomore,
Jonathan Clark, picked up his second 100-yard game do the season as he ran for 102 yards on 21 carries. Pitts finished the day with seven grabs for 157-yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively the Golden Bears were led by another stellar defensive performance by junior,
Rodrick Holloman, who finished with a team-high 10 tackles including one tackle for loss. Junior
Braysean Jones was again very active and provided pressure as he ended the night with seven tackles, two sacks and three tackles for loss.
Miles College remains on the road and returns to action next weekend, September 27
th as they travel to Albany, Georgia to take on the Golden Rams of Albany State University in a rematch of the 2013 SIAC Football Championship. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m CT
