ENGLISH HIGHLIGHTS NINE GOLDEN BEARS PRE-SEASON SELECTIONS
MONTOGOMERY, Ala. -- After a stellar 2013 campaign in which
Julantate English finished second in the conference with 90 tackles including 45 solo and 4.5 TFL's he was selected as the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) football pre-season Defensive Player of the Year highlighting a league high nine total Miles College pre-season selections as voted on by the SIAC head footbal coaches.
In 2013 English helped lead the Golden Bears to their second SIAC football championship appearance in three years.
Joining English on the first team defense were safety
Joe Beckham and defensive lineman Bryshon Jones while offensive linemen
Terrence Owens, Aderus Hood and tightend Delarius Webb were first team offense selections. Receiving second team honors were quarterback
Demetrice Price, offensive lineman Montell Collins and wide receiver
Antonio Pitts.
Last season Beckham led the Golden Bears with four (4) interceptions while adding 41 tackles (23 solo) and five pass-breakups. Jones had a breakout year leading the team with 5.5 sacks and nine tackles for loss. He also added two pass breakups and one forced fumble, fumble recovery and a blocked kick.
Offensively Owens, Hood and Collins anchored an offensive line that helped the Golden Bear attack average 24.8 points per game while finishing with 3,694 yards of total offense. Pitts led Miles College in catches (54), receiving yards (536) and receiving touchdowns with (6) while Webb finished with seven catches for 110 yeards and two touchdowns. Price a transfer from FCS Alabama State, finished the season with a 132.2 quarterback rating while completing 61.1% of his passes, throwing for 789 yards and four touchdowns. He also averaged 4.5 yards per rush, finishing with 152 rushing yards and another four touchdowns on the ground.
The SIAC head football coaches picked Miles College to finish second in the western division and third overall behind Albany State and Tuskegee.
The Golden Bears kick-off the 2014 campaign at home versus CIAA conference foe Shaw University on Saturday, September 6th, at Albert J. Sloan-Alumni Stadium in Fairfield, Ala at 6 p.m.
