Lady Golden Bears Can't Recover From Early Deficit in Loss to Virginia State

ATLANTA - The road was not kind to the Lady Golden Bears, who fell into a double-digit hole in the first half and were unable to recover in a 74-64 loss to Virginia State at the Clark Atlanta Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Porshia Blue had 16 points and nine rebounds while Javonne Brown added 11 points, four rebounds and three assists for Miles (1-1), which never led. The Lady Golden Bears turned the ball over 19 times which led to 18 points for VSU (2-1). Miles also struggled from the charity stripe, making just 12 of its 25 attempts (48 percent).

Virginia State scored the first six points of the game and led 14-3 just six minutes into the contest. Miles, though, closed the first half on a 9-3 run that cut the deficit to 33-29 at halftime. Two free throws by Waters with 10 minutes remaining brought the Lady Golden Bears to within 47-45 but they would get no closer. Three minutes later, the VSU lead was back in double figures and Miles was unable to keep from falling for the first time this season.

Tiffanie Adair had 20 points and 11 rebounds to pace Virginia State. Joidon Jennings had eight points, nine rebounds, eight assists and three steals for Miles, which will play Elizabeth City State Sunday at 1 p.m.
