GOLDEN BEARS DEFEAT KENTUCKY STATE, 19-13

Box Score FRANKFORT, AL --  The Golden Bears dominated the first three quarters of their Saturday afternoon contest against Kentucky State University defeating the Thorobreds, 19-13, in Frankfort, KY.

Miles College improves to (4-3, 3-1 SIAC) while KSU falls to (2-5, 1-3 SIAC).

Inserted into the lineup just before kick-off due to a shoulder injury to starting quarterback, Demetric Price, sophomore quarterback, David Whipple, put on an outstanding performance in his first career start leading MC to the conference and western division victory.

Whipple got the Golden Bears on the board first as he led MC on a ten play, 89-yard drive that took 4:40, capped by his two-yard touchdown run giving Miles the early 6-0 lead. Jason Coste missed the point after attempt.

Miles College extended the lead to 13-0 in the second quarter when Whipple connected with senior wide receiver, Darren Fife on a 13-yard touchdown strike in the corner of the endzone completing a nine play, 72 yard drive that spanned 4:06.

The MC defense would keep the Thorobreds out of the endzone the remainder of the half and went into the lockerrooms with the 13-0 lead.
Neither team would score in the third quarter.

With 5:23 remaining, Whipple scored his second rushing TD of the game this time from three yards out giving the Golden Bears a convincing 19-0 lead. Freshman back-up kicker, Nick Christianson's point-after-attempt was blocked.

Kentucky State would score two late fourth quarter touchdowns on TD passes by quarterback Ora Johnson to Josh Jackson and Moronkie Tapper making the final score 19-13.

The Miles College defense continued to dominate as they held KSU to only 79 yards rushing while forcing three turnovers (One Interception/Two Fumbles). The Golden Bears were also 2-for-2 on fourth down conversions and 3-for-3 in the redzone.

Whipple led the Golden Bear offense finishing 12-of-19 passing for 156 yards and one touchdown while also rushing for 76 yards on only 12 carries and two touchdowns. Sophomore runningback Jonathan Clark rushed for 90 yards on 14 carries averaging 6.4 per carry while freshman wide receiver, Robert Walker, hauled in five catches for 90 yards.

Defensively Miles was led by freshman linebacker Ronderick Rice who finished with a  team-high eight tackles while senior defensive end Skylar Smith chipped in with two sacks. Tuskegee transfer, Travis Lee, finished with six tackles and one interception.

Miles College returns to action next Saturday, October 25th, as they travel to Jackson, TN to take on the Dragons of Lane College in SIAC conference play. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. CT
