GOLDEN BEARS DROP SEASON OPENER TO NORTH ALABAMA, 42-7
Box Score FLORENCE, AL -- The Miles College Golden Bears dropped the 2013 season opener 42 -7 to the University of North Alabama Lions Thursday evening in front of 12,094 fans at Braly Memorial Stadium in Florence, Alabama.
The Golden Bears (0-1) wasted little time to get on the board as senior quarterback,
David Thomas, found senior wide receiver,
Lonnie Outlaw, Jr., down the left sideline on a 75 yard strike on the first play of the game giving MC the early 7-0 lead.
It wouldn't take long for UNA to respond as they mounted a 10-play, 38 yard drive capped by a two yard plunge by quarterback Luke Wingo tying the game at 7-7.
North Alabama (1-0) would put together another 10-play drive, going 72 yards for another Wingo touchdown run, from nine yards out giving the Lions the lead for good 14-7.
Lions running back, Lamonte Thompson, would close out the first half scoring with touchdown runs of 38 and 69 yards giving UNA the 28-7 halftime lead.
The Miles College defense would regroup in the 2nd half holding UNA's offense to only one score, a five yard touchdown run by Chris Coffey. North Alabama's special teams would add a 50 yard punt return by Philbert Martial to close out the scoring.
The Golden Bears offense was held to only 264 yards of total offense while UNA's offense compiled 480 total yards.
Leading MC on offense was Thomas who finished 9 of 15, for 131 yards and a touchdown. On defense the Golden Bears were led by
Joe Beckham who finished with nine tackles, while
Brandon Smith finished with three tackles for loss.
Thompson led North Alabama with 189 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, while Wingo finished with 149 passing yards, and two rushing touchdowns.
Miles College travels to Carrolton, Ga. next Saturday, September 14th, to face the Wolves of the University of West Georgia at 6 p.m.
