MILES ROUTES BENEDICT 50-7

FAIRFIELD, AL – Sophomore running back Devonta Parker-Johnson scored three times while rushing for 74 yards and grabbing another 24 yards to lead the Miles College Golden Bears (4-1; 2-0) to victory over winless Benedict College (0-5; 0-2) 50-7 before a crowd of 3,291 fans at Albert J. Sloan-Alumni Stadium. The Golden Bears had not scored 50 points or more since a 93-0 rout of Paine College in 1959.

This was a night of offense for the Golden Bears as the team put up 602 yards of total offense, 309 yards in rushing and 340 yards in passing.  Miles held Benedict to a team-low 11 rushing yards and 197 passing yards for 208 yards of total offense. Miles combined for 28 first downs to benedicts 10, while running 72 total offensive plays to Benedicts 55 plays.

Miles junior kicker Patton Chambers hit 6-of-6 PAT's and went 2-for-2 in field goals in the win. Senior running back Jordan Lewis came off the bench to gain a game high 75 yards and one touchdown for Miles, junior running back Floyd Graves added 62 yards and senior quarterback David Thomas another 61 yards and one touchdown. Thomas completed 15-of-22 passes for 293 yards and one interception. Sophomore wide receiver D. J. Fife led Miles with 96 yards and a 53 yard catch.

Defensively for the Golden Bears, junior linebacker Julantate English and sophomore defensive lineman Alexander Morrison led the way with eight tackles each. English had a half sack for an eight yard loss, one and a half tackle-for-loss of nine yards and two quarterback hurries. Morrison had one and a half tackle-for-loss of three yards and forced one fumble. Junior linebacker Cantrell Daniels had seven tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble, while senior defensive back Keith Richburg, Jr. added six more tackles and a half tackle-for-loss.  

Tyquan Bazemore led Benedict in rushing with 29 yards, Marcus Graham completed 11-of-21 passes for 158 yards and an interception and Mujahid Assad led the Tigers with three catches for 106 yards.

Parker-Johnson scored first for Miles from 2-yards out with 12:47 left in the first half, Chambers PAT was good. (MC 7 – B C 0)

Parker-Johnson scored his second touchdown on 5-yards with 3:28 remaining in the first quarter, Chambers PAT kick good. (MC 14 – BC 0)

Chambers scored the only score in the second quarter with a 26-yard field goal with 2:20. (MC 17 – BC 0)

In the third quarter, Thomas scored from 14-yards out for the Golden Bears with 8:23 left, Chambers PAT kick good. (MC 24 – BC 0)

With 5:15 remaining in third quarter, Benedict scored its only points on a 12-yard pass from Marcus Graham to Mujahid Assad and Eduar Heemandez PAT kick good. (MC 24 - BC 7)

Lewis 12-yard run with 2:43 left rounded out Miles scoring in the third quarter, Chambers PAT kick good. (MC 31 – BC 7)

With 14:10 left in the fourth quarter, Chambers kicked a 24-yard field goal and Miles forced a safety on Benedict with 12:12 remaining. (MC 36 – BC 7)

Parker Johnson and freshman wide receiver Michael Ross would complete Miles scoring, as Parker Johnson scored on an 8-yard run and Ross scored from 17-yards out, both PAT's good. (MC 50 - BC 7)

Miles next game is homecoming on Saturday, October 6 with Clark Atlanta University at Albert J. Sloan-Alumni Stadium, with the game scheduled for 4 p.m.
