MILES GET FIRST WIN OVER SHAW 28-15

Durham, NC – The Miles College Golden Bears improved to 1-1 with their first win on Saturday, September 8 over Shaw University (0-2) 28-15 at Durham County Memorial Stadium in Durham, NC.

Both teams started slowly, with Miles out gaining Shaw in rushing with 72 yards to 34, but only managed 190 yards in passing and 260 yards of total offense.

Shaw scored first in the second quarter on a 28 yard field goal by George Mulumba to give Shaw a 3-0 lead. On the next drive, Miles drove the length of the field to Shaw's one, before fumbling the ball. Shaw's Chris Ellerbe recovered the ball and returned it 81 yards to the Miles 14 yard-line. Shaw ended the drive with a failed field goal.

With .28 seconds remaining in the second quarter Miles quarterback David Thomas connected with wide receiver Antonio Pitts on a three yard touchdown pass, giving Miles a 7-3 lead, as Patton Chambers PAT kick was good. The drive went for five plays and 34 yards.

In the opening drive of the third quarter, Miles drove the Bears backward 12 yards and with a personal foul penalty called on Shaw during their punter James Stallons 41 yard punt, allowed the Golden Bears to start the drive on Shaw's 34 yard-line. Then, with 11:58 left in the quarter, quarterback David Thomas went up the middle for a 24 yard touchdown to put Miles up 14-3. The drive capped off a five play drive

With 3:04 remaining in the third quarter, Thomas hit wide receiver Jerromy Mardis on an 83 yard touchdown pass for a 21-3 score.

Shaw opened the fourth quarter on Miles' 15 yard line, but turned the ball over on downs.  The Golden Bears punter David Uselton, Jr., first punt was blocked by Shaw's' Chris Ellerbe and recovered by Shaw inside the Miles 20.  Shaw's Antonio Dunn scored on a three yard run three plays later. The extra-point attempt failed, making the score 21-9 at the 12:24 mark.

Later in the quarter, Shaw was hit with a back-to-back penalty. One was a pass interference call and a un-sportsman penalty, which gave Miles the ball on Shaw's' 8-yard line. Miles running back Denzel Veale on an option play went around the left side for an eight-yard touchdown for a Miles 28-9 lead with.4:59 remaining.

Shaw scored on their final drive from their 13-yard line and 10 plays, 87 yards later, Marquise Grizzle scored from one yard out. The score completed the scoring at 28-15 with 37 seconds left.

Thomas went 12-of-21 for 190 yards, one interception, and two touchdowns, and sacked four times, as well as rushing for 21 yards and a touchdown. Devonta Parker-Johnson led the team with 50 yards in rushing and Jerromy Mardis four catches for 119 yards and one touchdown.
 
On defense, Linebackers Reginald Virges and James Gaines, III, led the Golden Bears with seven tackles apiece. Virges had six solo tackles and one assist and Gaines had four solo tackles, three assist, one sack and one tackle-for-loss of 12 yards.

Miles will host the University of West Georgia on Saturday, September 15 at Albert J. Sloan-Alumni Stadium on Miles campus at 6 p.m.
