Day One
HAMPTON, Georgia (April 19, 2012) – Day One of the 2012 SIAC Softball Championship opened with all twelve teams in action. Divisional rivalries and a couple of upsets highlighted the action of day one.
Paine jumped out early as Fernisha McMillian belted a home run to put the Lions up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Miles responded as
Tiffany Roberts hit a double to score
Terri Roberts who singled to open the inning.
In the bottom of the second, Miles opened the inning with both
Katie Haisten and Brianna Battentine each drawing walks. RBI singles by
Kendra O'Neal,
Terri Roberts and an RBI double by
Tiffany Roberts to score Terri made the score 4-1 in favor of the Lady Bears from Fairfield.
In the fourth inning, Miles would get a two-run home run from Terry Roberts and a RBI double from Brittany Mitchell to account for the 7-1 Miles scoring margin.
Kayla Bowmaster (9-7) got the win for Miles pitching seven innings striking out one and walking none. Simone Kennedy worked six innings walking six and striking out two for Paine.
Miles (26-26) advances to face Kentucky State while Paine (14-21) will play in the elimination bracket at noon.
Game #6: Kentucky State defeat Miles (5-1)
Miles got on the board first when
Terri Roberts singled and scored on an
Amanda Talley RBI single. The Lady Bears would hold the lead until the bottom of the fourth inning when Shenaaz Burrell belted a home run to tie the game.
In the fifth inning with Angelica Galindo and Jasmine Anderson on base, Rikki Martinez hit a two-run single giving the Thorobrettes a 3-1 lead. In the sixth inning, Burrell reached on an error before scoring on Galindo's RBI single. The next batter, Caitlyn Pierotti had an RBI single of her own making the final score 5-1.
KSU's Burrell (9-6) worked seven innings striking out four and walking four.
Amanda Talley (7-8) pitched six innings walking one in the loss.
Kentucky State (27-16) advances to face Fort Valley State (15-30) Friday at 3 pm; Miles (26-27) will take on Clark Atlanta (20-23) in an elimination game Friday at 9 am.
