LADY BEARS SPLIT SEASON OPENER IN ALCORN STATE TOURNAMENT

IRONDALE, AL – The Miles College Lady Bears (1-1) softball team opened their season with a split of two games in the Alcorn State University Tournament in Irondale today as they were defeated by host Alcorn State (2-0) 3-2 and beat the University of Maryland Eastern Shores ((0-2) 19-11.

Heather Mitchell started the game for Miles going four innings and giving up two unearned runs on two hits and striking out six, but Amanda Talley got the loss after two innings and allowing one earned run and two hits.  Melissa Rubio picked up the win for Alcorn State, as she allowed two earned runs on seven hits.

Kayla Cox went 2-for3 with one RBI and Katie Hastines was 1-for-2 with a run scored and one RBI. Amanda Talley scored the only other run.

Kayla Bowmaster went 3.1 innings for the win over The University of Maryland Eastern Shores, while giving up two hits and five earned runs. C. Gurrola got the loss for UMES as she gave up 19 runs (14 earned) on 21 hits.

Katie Hastines was 5-for-5 at the plate, scored five times and drove in a run. Kendra O'Neal, Terri Roberts and Evette Ransaw each went 3-for-5 on the day, with Roberts having six RBI's.
