GOLDEN BEARS DEFEAT CLARK ATLANTA 28-7

FAIRFIELD, AL –The Miles College Golden Bears football team won their fifth straight game on Saturday, October 6 over Clark Atlanta University at Albert J. Sloan-Alumni Stadium 28-7 before 13,783 fans and Miles best start since 1958.  The Golden Bears under head coach T. J. “Mule” Knox in 1958 began the season with a 5-0 record and finished the season with a 5-2 record.

Miles improves its record to 5-1 and 3-0 in the SIAC, with conference wins over Albany State University, Benedict College and Clark Atlanta University from the Eastern Division. Clark Atlanta falls to 1-5 and 1-3 in conference play.

Miles gained 338-yards of total offense, while holding Clark Atlanta to 184-yards of total offense. The Golden Bears rushed for 143-yards on 42 attempts and threw for another 195-yard. Clark Atlanta rushed for 106-yards on 37 attempts and passed for only 78-yards. Miles racked up 18 first downs, with 6 in rushing, 9 in passing and 3 by way of penalties. Clark Atlanta had 11 first downs. Miles punted five times for 188-yards and a 37.6 yard per punt average.

Miles senior quarterback David Thomas completed 14-of-23 passes for 195-yards with two touchdowns and rushed for 28-yards and another touchdown in the win over Clark Atlanta. Junior running back Floyd Graves rushed for 52-yards and one touchdown, sophomore running back Devonta Parker-Johnson went for 38-yards. Sophomore wide receiver Antonio Pitts led the receiving core with 78-yards, and senior wide receiver Jerromy Mardis had 71-yards, while freshman punter David Uselton, Jr., punted 5 times for 188-yards.

On defense, sophomore defensive lineman Alexander Morrison led the Golden Bears with 8 tackles (7 solo and 1 assist), one sack and 3 tackles-for-loss and junior linebacker Reginald Virges added 8 tackles (4 solo and 4 assist) with 1.5 tackles-for-loss, forced one fumble and broke-up 4 passes. Junior linebackers James Gaines, III and Cantrell Daniels collected 7 tackles apiece and Gaines forced one fumble and added 2.5 tackle-for-loss.

Quarterback David Thomas went up the middle Miles first score on a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter with 3:51 remaining to complete a 7 play, 40-yard drive, Patton Chambers PAT good. MC 7 – CAU 0

Antwan Flower for Clark Atlanta tied the game with 1:12 left in the first quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run, Austin Casillas PAT good. MC 7 – CAU 7

Miles put together a 6 play, 66 yard drive before halftime to score with .05 remaining as Thomas connected with Antonio Pitts on a 29-yard touchdown pass to give Miles a 14-7 lead. Thomas and Pitts would hook-up again in the third quarter on a 19-yard touchdown pass with 4:43 left    to give Miles a commanding lead, Chambers PAT kicks good. MC 21 – CAU 7

Floyd Graves completed Miles scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run to cap off a 5 play, 39-yard drive in the fourth quarter with 5:45 left, Chambers PAT kick good. MC 28 – CAU 7                

The Golden Bears will travel to Frankfort, KY on Saturday, October 13 to play the Thorobreds of Kentucky State University in a 1:30 game at Alumni Stadium.
