Courtney English (Atmore, AL) scored a double-double with game-highs of 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Miles College Lady Bears (9-6; 7-4) basketball team as they defeat the Lady Lions of Paine College (3-12; 3-8) 81-57 this afternoon at Knox-Windham Gymnasium.
Miles hit 12-of-26 shots from the floor, 5-of-8 free throws and 5-of-9 three pointers in the first half while taking a 34-24 lead to locker room at halftime. Paine scored on 7-of-20 shots and 9-of-12 free throws.
English went 7-for-13 from the floor, 5-of-9 on the foul line, four assists and three steals, while senior guard
Toccara Charles (Childersburg, AL) scored 16 points on a 6-for-9 night from the floor and 4-of 7 in 3-pointers. Senior forward
Sammeika Thomas (Birmingham, AL) added 12 points, nine rebounds, and game-highs five assist, seven steals and career-high eight blocked shots and hit 8-of-8 free throws. Senior guard
Charlesia Norman (Morrow, GA) scored nine points and junior guard
Monique King (Birmingham, AL) added six points and five boards.
For the game, the Lady Bears led by 25 points with 7:23 left in the game and Paine led by 12 in the first half at the 19:07 mark. Miles hit 47.4 (27-of-57) percent of their shots and 62.9 (22-of-35) percent at the line, while Paine shot 31.6 (18-of-57) percent and 55.9 (19-of-34) percent from the free throw line. The Lady Bears out rebounded Paine 47-35, while turning the ball over 36 times to Paine 32.
Quandra Rodgers led the Lady Lions in scoring with 16 points and Kharyna Stanford grabbed six rebounds.
The Lady Bears will hit the road on a six game road trip starting with Fort Valley State University on Tuesday, January 24 in Fort Valley, GA at 6:00 p.m.
