BOWMASTER SHUT OUT LEMOYNE-OWEN IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP
BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Miles College softball team claimed a pair of conference
victories over the Lady Magicians of LeMoyne-Owen College 8-0 and 9-1 on Wednesday to close out Wednesday's action at Jefferson State Field.
Miles improves its overall record to 20-22 and 14-6 in the SIAC, while LeMoyne-Owen drop to 4-20 and 0-20 in the conference.
Junior
Kayla Bowmaster (11-10) shut out the Lady Magicians in game one on a four hitter for the win. Bowmaster went five innings and struck out ten batters.
Meri Napier picked up the loss for LeMoyne-Owen.
Senior
DeAndrea Dawson started the fifth inning off with a single, sophomore
Terri Roberts signed, then both advanced on an error by LeMoyne-Owen's third baseman. Sophomore
Kayla Gable-Bush drove in the first two runs with her single to left field then advanced to second on the throw to home plate. Senior
Valerie Pena doubled Bush home. Senior
Kendra Ward plate appearance proved to be big as she homered the final two runs in.
In the fourth, Dawson led off the inning with a single,
Terri Roberts singled to move Dawson to third. Dawson then stole home and Roberts stole third and scored on an error by LeMoyne-Owen's catcher.
Ward singled to start the fifth, junior
Brittney Mitchell would single and advance Ward to third. Ward scored the winning run off a pop-fly by freshman
Brianna Barrentine to center field.
In game two, LeMoyne-Owen scored their only run in the first inning, while Miles jumped on board in the third with a run, two more in the fourth and six runs in the fifth.
Dawson went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Lady Bears with one RBI, scored two runs and a double, while Barrentine was 2-for-2, scored two runs and doubled. Pena and Ward had 2-of-3 hits while driving in one RBI, scored one run each and Pena had a double. Brittany Mitchell went 1-for-3 with one RBI, one run scored and doubled, while Woods was 1-for-3 and two RBI's.
Pena (4-2) picked up her fourth win of the season by going five innings to throw a four hitter, one run and five strike outs.
The Lady Bears will play their final regular season games at home this weekend before heading to the SIAC Softball Championship in Columbus, GA, as they host the Lady Dragons of Lane College in a four game conference series on Saturday, April 16 in Birmingham at Jefferson State Field. Game one on both days is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
