LADY BEARS POUND KENTUCKY STATE 57-41

Sammeika Thomas had a game-high double-double 13 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Miles College Lady Bears (13-6; 10-5) over the Kentucky State University Lady Thorobreds (10-9; 7-8) in Saturday afternoon matchup at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The Lady Bears pounded the Lady Thorobreds ending the afternoon with a 57-41 victory.
The Lady Thorobreds open the game with a 10-3 run off a layup by Kiera Nelson with 15:42 left and they would remain in the control until the Lady Bears closed the gap 16-17 on a 3-pointer by junior Tocarra Charles with 9:02 left. Junior
Charlesia Norman gave Miles the lead 19-17 with a 3-pointer at the 6:45 mark. Kentucky State regained the lead 25-23 on two free throws by Joanna Powell, but Thomas would tie the game at 25-25 on a layup with 1:50 left to halftime. The teams would go to half tied 25-25.
Miles shot just 25.0 percent from the field, 60.0 percent from three point land and 50.0 percent at the free throw line. Kentucky State shot 42.1 percent from the floor and 57.1 percent from the foul line. Miles beat the Lady Thorobreds 20-14 on the boards.
Charles, Thomas and Norman had six points apice for the Lady Bears at halftime, while Thomas grabbed six rebounds. Raven Ward scored 11 points for the Lady Thorobreds.
Kentucky State started the second half like the first half jumping out to a six point advantage 34-28 with 14:21 to go. Senior Ashley Orhpey would put Miles ahead 36-35 on a layup with 6:36 remaining. The Lady Bears owned the floor from that point as they jumped out to a 48-38 lead with 2:33 on the clock. Ashlee Barley with eight second left.
For the game, the Lady Bears shot 31.3 percent from the floor and 56.0 percent (14-of-25) free throws, while the Lady Thorobreds hit 31.8 percent from the field and 50.0 percent at the line. Miles grabbed 46 rebounds to Kentucky State 36.
Thomas scored on 5-of-14 shots from the floor, 3-for-5 in free throws, three assists, two blocks and four steals, while Charles added a game-high 13 points and hit 2-of-2 free throws. Orphey and Norman chipped in nine and eight points and sophomore
Alicia Ware grabbing six rebounds to go with Orphey's six.
Raven Ward led Kentucky State University with 13 points and Joanna Powell had 10 rebounds.
The Lady Bears will be back in action on Tuesday, February 8 as they take on the Lady Tigers of Benedict College at Knox-Windham Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.
