LADY BEARS DEFEAT LANE 56-50

JACKSON, TN – The Miles College Lady Bears (15-6; 12-5 SIAC) went into Dragon country and walked away with a six point victory over the Lady Dragons of Lane College 56-50 Thursday night at Oman Arena.

Miles in the first half jumped out to an 11 point lead 20-9 with 7:50 on the clock and their largest lead of 17 (34-17) on two free throws by senior Ashley Orphey with 57 seconds left to half. Rakelle Riley hit a 3-pointer for Lady Dragons with 12 seconds left to close the gap to 34-20.

Miles shot 44.8 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the free throw line, while Lane hit 20.0 percent from the floor and 87.5 percent on the line.

The Lady Dragons out rebounded the Lady Bears 20-17.

In the second half, Miles went out to an 18 points lead 46-28 on a tray by junior Toccara Charles at the 15:01 mark, but Lane would go on a 22-8 run to close the gap to 53-50 with 5:01 remaining. Then with 10 seconds remaining sophomore Sammeika Thomas drained two free throws to give Miles a 55-50 lead and junior #Alicia Ware closed the scoring out with a free throw with one second left and the win 56-50.

Miles hit 37.0 percent of it shots from the floor, 35.3 percent from three point land and 58.8 percent (10-for-17) at the free throw line. Lane shot 28.3 percent on the floor and 93.8 percent from the line. Both teams grabbed 38 rebounds apice.

Charles led all scorers with a game-high 19 points, while going 7-of-15 from the floor and 5-for-11 from behind the arch. Ware added 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Thomas had seven boards and six points. Orphey added six rebounds and five points.

Natasha Farr scored 17 points for Lane and Shelice Crater chipped in 16 more.

The Lady Bears will host the Lady Panthers of Clark Atlanta University on Wednesday, February 16 at 5:30 p.m.
